How to overcome guilty feeling and avoid regret?

There are times in our life when we regret for not doing one or another thing like making that mistake, being in that (bad) relationship, saying negative to someone etc. A sense of loss, disappointment and feeling of remorse can sometime stop us from moving forward and we get stuck!

A certain healthy regret may be good because doing so we look back into our life, analyze, learn and do the things that we can do now.

The healthy regret may sometime turn into unhealthy one and even hamper with our daily life.

Here are some helpful ideas to avoid that unhealthy and destructive guilty feeling.

The real thing is reality!

The reality of life is that we all experience good and bad moments. Try to accept those bad moments as well. We realize that something went wrong only after the time has passed. But actually, such events will guide us to be more careful in the future.

Be optimistic

Being positive is about looking at the brighter side of everything. Knowingly or unknowingly we all make mistakes! But these mistakes are what warns us not to repeat the same thing in coming days and be more confident and better person.

Learn

There is/are reason/s behind everything that happens in our life. The thing that you are feeling guilty for definitely might have happened for some reasons. Look, do proper analysis and try to figure out the cause. Just learn from those events and moments.

Act now

See clearly at the past happenings that you are feeling guilty for. The chances may be that you can do what you could or should have done now. You only might have been hesitant to take action for one or another reason. If it is IMPORTANT FOR YOU and will make you a happier person then don't wait.

If you are feeling guilty that you shouldn't have stopped your study then join new class without any delay!

If you think that you have said wrong thing to somebody then if possible, approach the person and say sorry. Do whatever you can do on your part. Whether he/she will forgive you or not is up to him/her. You will feel better and be happier person because IT MATTERS TO YOU!

Change the attitude

Excessive and repeated "I should have proposed that boy/girl..., I should have stayed longer in my village..., I shouldn't have moved here..." kind of attitude bring negative feelings in us. It it better to loose this kind of attitude. The past is past! We can't go there!

Rather than worrying, learn from those past experiences and do your best at the moment. It is not bad to look at our past but doing so we should not ruin our present. If we can't do anything about our past, at least can make our future better by doing the best in present. The milk has spilled. Don't cry over it. Life continuous to go on. Just move on. Life is too short to worry!
